Cycling the Tauern Cycle Path through Mittersill

Cyclists love the diverse landscapes of the Salzburg region. Varied terrain, magnificent views, and lush nature accompany excursions on two wheels. The Tauern Cycle Path is undoubtedly one of the most popular tours. Spanning 270 or 310 km, it connects Krimml with Passau with relatively little elevation gain. Did you know that the Tauern Cycle Path runs right through Mittersill? Two exciting stages pass through the town.

From Krimml to Mittersill

The starting point for the first stage of the Tauern Cycle Path, and your bike tour to Mittersill, is the Krimml Waterfalls, accessible via the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn’s bike transport service. In just under three hours, you’ll cover 31.6 km, mostly gently downhill, to Mittersill’s town square. From the parking lot, you first cycle to a Salzach bridge, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the waterfalls. Via a forest path, you reach the town center and continue on the new railway cycle path to Neukirchen. The Tauern Cycle Path to Mittersill now takes a small detour via Bramberg and on to the Hollersbach bathing lake – ideal for a refreshing break on warm days. Finally, you continue along the Salzach river to Mittersill.

From Mittersill to Bruck

After a restful night at Hotel Bräurup, you’ll embark on the second stage. On the cycle path through Mittersill, you first head to Felben – a stop at the local history museum is always worthwhile. A short ascent leads to Lichtenau Castle and then continues towards Lengdorf, Hummersdorf, and Piesendorf. Soon you’ll see a large substation, which points the way to Kaprun. On the asphalt path, you now continue through Filzmoos before the Tauern Cycle Path branches off towards Bruck. 32.5 km and a good two hours of cycling make for a pleasant day trip. Once back at Bräurup – either by bike or with the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn – a variety of culinary delights await you.

The Tauern Cycle Path through Mittersill comprises two of nine stages, which continue along the Salzach river via Bischofshofen and Golling to Salzburg, and finally into Upper Austrian and Bavarian regions.
