Excursion to the waterfall near Mittersill in Krimml
From Mittersill to the waterfall in half an hour by car: The excursion dream come true for a family vacation in the Salzburger Land reveals unimagined natural forces that are hard to put into words. The Krimml Waterfalls are Europe’s largest waterfalls with an impressive drop height of 380 meters. It is not without reason that this natural spectacle is one of the country’s most popular sights, attracting hundreds of thousands of guests to the Hohe Tauern National Park every year. But it all starts off quite gently.
From alpine meadow to gradient
Before the waterfall becomes a waterfall, a delicate body of water flows for about 20 km through level alpine meadows at the end of the Krimml Achental. Only then does the Krimml Ache gradually transform into a roaring glacier stream that shoots towards the valley exit. Three massive steps await the masses there: the Krimml Waterfalls.
At high speed, an average of 5.6 m³ of water per second (!) plunges down the rock. A pleasant drizzle forms around the waterfalls, the refreshing effect of which is worth more than gold, especially in summer.
The waterfall trail in Krimml
As early as 1900, a small hiking trail was set up, which winds in serpentines to the various viewpoints and pulpits of the Krimml Waterfalls. From the parking lot, it is just under a quarter of an hour’s walk to the lower waterfall.
The ascent to the uppermost waterfall and further into the Krimml Achtental takes just over an hour. Not included, of course, are the many short stops, because you simply have to enjoy the spectacular views of the primeval force and the pleasant drizzle with all your senses.
