Hike to the Gaisstein in Stuhlfelden

The Pinzgau grass mountains invite you to hike and climb. Their natural beauty, paired with varied ascents and inspiring views of the vast Alpine landscape, lead right through the Hohe Tauern National Park in the summer holiday region of Mittersill-Hollersbach-Stuhlfelden. Sporty, experienced hikers are always looking for new challenges. A hike to the Gaisstein in Stuhlfelden separates the proverbial wheat from the chaff. Bräurup summer guests know (and hike) more.

Up to the grass giant!

A Gaisstein hike certainly commands respect, because at 2,363 m it is one of the highest grass mountains in Europe. But the panorama is something special, because the fantastic view encompasses an impressive 266 three-thousand-metre peaks in the entire national park region as well as the Kitzbühel Alps. The start is in Stuhlfelden, just over ten kilometres from Hotel Bräurup in Mittersill, at the Bürglhütte at 1,700 m above sea level. Of course, you can also hike up from the town centre past the Saueck chapel, but in view of the great challenge that follows, this should only be tackled with more than enough fitness.

Alpine skills are a must!

But now to the hike to the Gaisstein in Stuhlfelden itself, because once you have arrived at the Bürglhütte, things get really exciting. Here you can expect a proud 667 metres in altitude over a length of 5.7 km. The landscape and the view are a dream, but the steadily rising hiking trail can be quite tricky. After a short turn-off to the right, always keep to the left on the path that leads to the summit of the Gaisstein. The ascent and descent, especially in the summit area, involve a certain risk of falling. Therefore, you should only tackle this tour with sufficient alpine skills and appropriate equipment!

The Bräurup team will be happy to advise you on the comprehensive range of hiking opportunities in the Hohe Tauern National Park region and in the Kitzbühel Alps, and will of course find numerous, and perhaps somewhat more leisurely, alternatives to this highly demanding mountain tour. Make our hotel in Mittersill your base camp for your next summer holiday – we would be happy to create a non-binding holiday offer for you!
